Forty million people in the US suffer from chronic, long term sleep disorders; and an additional 20 million people experience occasional sleep problems.
Some disorders can be episodic, like the insomnia that may present itself after a major event, like the loss of a job or a death in the family. Over time the episodic insomnia subsides and a normal pattern of sleep resumes. Some sleep disorders, however, are chronic and are nightly challenges to healthy, recuperative sleep. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can be either episodic or chronic.
There are a large number of sleep disorders, however, the top three sleep disorders that fall into the chronic category are Insomnia, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and Sleep Apnea.
Spouses - Life Partners
When you share life with someone who has a sleep disorder, your life is impacted as well. The spouse or life partner is often the best historian of the sleep problem their significant other is experiencing. Our specialty sleep practice is available to help your partner and in turn help you.
We’re sure you have your own story to tell about sleep and how disruptive it can be to the well being of both partners in the relationship.
We encourage you to become acquainted with the information on this website; you can then encourage your partner to do the same. At Comprehensive Sleep Wellness we understand sleep. We also understand how elusive a night of restful sleep can be for some people.Insomnia
An insomnia sufferer has a lot of trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. They experience low energy and sleepiness during the day from the lack of uninterrupted healthy sleep. Lack of sleep interferes with enjoying life. A sleep specialist can help with chronic insomnia by identifying the underlying causes and developing a pathway towards normalcy in the sleep–awake cycle.
RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome)
When someone with RLS sleeps they experience sensations in their legs, and sometimes their arms, that some sufferers have described as feeling like hundreds of bugs are crawling all over their limb(s). The feeling causes them to move their legs to relieve the bug crawling sensation. RLS is sleep disorder, not a bug problem. It does, however, prevent someone from having a comfortable, restful sleep.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is a disorder of the breathing process that happens while you’re sleeping. There are several forms of Sleep Apnea, each form causes interrupted breathing and a reduced oxygen flow to your body during sleep. All forms of Sleep Apnea are serious and result in the development of significant health risks, which include heart attack and stroke. People with Sleep Apnea experience nightly episodes of repeated cessation of breathing followed by a dramatic gasping for air. Loud snoring is another sign of Sleep Apnea and is experienced by most, but not all, sufferers. A continuous lack of quality sleep causes the Apnea sufferer to live a life of constant sleepiness and increases their risk of developing serious medical problems.
